Gavin's Story

Hello R.H. King March 2008 My King years were a lot of fun. There were a lot of good people, some neat teachers, great sports and super parties. Our group always seemed to be up to something. The funniest guy of the bunch was Paul Tremblay. Dan Longboat was the coolest. (our Fonzie ¿ sort of) Dave Kelly was the jock. Steve Frankland and I were the music junkies. We use to build our own speakers and even sold some. I remember playing ball tag in the halls after school with a volleyball. There were about 20 or 25 players. We had a great time until someone broke the glass window in the library door. That was the end of that. I remember sliding down the banisters and the occasional pile up at the bottom of the stairs. The 1973ers were a bit special as it was the 50th graduating class. There were some nice celebrations. I¿ve still got the yearbook. But my best memory of our last year at King was the Canada / Soviet hockey series. It seems like yesterday. I can remember each game and where we were and then the final one. WOW. We experienced one of the greatest moments in Canadian sports history. Who would have thought that at the time? After King I went to York University and got my piece of paper. Near the end of my King time I met a girl from Midland C.I. through Paul Tremblay. We met at a basketball game. Her name is Marcia. We dated on and off for a couple of years, but it always seemed to be in the winter. Then that fateful May long weekend in 1976 changed everything. I saw her in a bikini and WOW. We were engaged in October and got married in September 1978. We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon. This year is our 30th anniversary. In 1980 we bought a ...Expand for more
home in Pickering and we are still here. The kids were all born here. They started coming fast. Marcia is one of eleven, so she was ready for anything. We ended up with two girls, now aged 26 and 23 and two boys who are 21 and 18. We are almost through the university / college years. Thank goodness. Our eldest daughter just got married last November. It was a true Princess wedding, including a castle and a horse and carriage. I had wanted to be a teacher, but didn¿t get in. At that time Marcia started working in Reinsurance and it seemed interesting. So I decided to pursue that and as they say, I¿ve never looked back. I¿ve been on the selling and buying sides. Marcia actually had two separate careers in reinsurance. In between, she was home with the kids for about 15 years. Now we actually work together. It¿s great. Our main family vacation place has been Florida. We¿ve been driving down since the mid-70¿s. Most years we drove with all the kids and would take our time and sightsee in places like Vermont, New York, Memphis, New Orleans, Texas, California, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, etc. We have also seen most of Canada from East to West. We have traveled overseas a fair bit over the years. We have vacationed in Dominican Republic, Bahamas and a few other islands. We¿ve been many times to Bermuda and the U.K. We went twice to Hawaii. We went once to South Africa around the Capetown area and the wine regions. We also went on a safari in Kruger Park. Probably the greatest adventure we will ever have. Well, there you have it. How I spent the last 35 years. This site has been great. I¿ve re-connected with many old friends. Hope to hear from you soon. Gavin
